Late Sun Radio / About

The story

Who’s behind the decks?

A room above the valley, a coyote who never says a word, and lofi house that starts when the sun goes low.

The place

The room above the valley

A canyon-side mid-century living room. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a wooden deck, and below, the city lights fill the flats as the sun goes.

Two turntables and a rotary mixer on a walnut credenza, a wall of records, a low terracotta sofa, a monstera, an agave, a citrus tree on the deck, and a glass that’s always sweating.

Illustration: the living room at golden hour. Rayo the coyote holds one headphone cup to his ear at the decks; a raven sits on a speaker; a jackrabbit and a quail sit on the sofa by the open glass doors.

The host

Meet Rayo. He won’t say hi.

Rayo (“ray-oh”, a ray of the late sun) is an original coyote: tan-gold coat, a small notch in his left ear, a terracotta shirt, and cream headphones with one cup pushed off the ear, so he hears the record and the room at the same time.

He never speaks. He flips the record, lights the lamp at dusk, waters the agave. Rayo is a character: he doesn’t post, email or message anyone. Real messages come from latesunradio@gmail.com.

Character art: Rayo, a coyote with amber half-lidded eyes, a notch in his left ear, cream headphones around his neck and an open terracotta shirt with a cream stripe.

The couch

The couch crew never leaves

  • The jackrabbitAlways on the sofa, always with an iced drink.
  • The quailPerched on the sofa. At dusk a whole family of quail lines up on the deck rail.
  • The ravenAsleep on top of a speaker. Has never missed a set.
  • The tortoiseWritten into the late-night plan. He hasn’t arrived yet.

The sound

Why lofi house, and why golden hour?

Most lofi is made for studying. Ours is for the hour after: four on the floor, rolling bass, lush pads, analog crackle, no vocals, between 108 and 118 beats per minute. Warm enough to move to, soft enough to leave on.

Golden hour is when the day lets go, so that’s where the station starts. When the 24/7 stream begins, the window becomes the clock: golden hour, dusk, night, dawn. Until then, Vol. 1 is the whole hour in one mix.
